How to Crochet a Button Hole

I have a young friend and Etsy teammate who recently asked for a lesson in crocheting shaped holes. After some puzzling on how to do this over a distance (and how to demonstrate it at all O.o), I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to show the process is A) through a blog, so I can lay the steps out in proper order and B) by showing foundational skills first.

Tonight's lesson is how to crochet a button hole. This will give the basic idea to build on.

Step one: Crochet a swatch in any basic stitch you like. I am working single crochet stitch, ten stitches across. Do a few rows before you begin your button hole row.

Step two: Figure out how big your button hole needs to be. (My button is about three stitches wide.)Add one to whatever number you came up with. Stop crocheting (x) number of stitches away from the end of the row. (In my case, four stitches away from the end.)

Step three: Chain the number of stitches that your button is wide (in my case, chain three).

Step four: Stitch into the last stitch of your fabric. Tada! A hole! Make your turning chain and start your way back, as per usual.

Step five: Stitch INTO the hole (x) times, where (x) is equal to the number of chains you did last row.

My chain was three stitches long, so I will single crochet into the hole three times.

Step six: Continue working across your fabric as per usual.

Step seven: Continue working rows as needed until fabric is desired length.

Check back tomorrow, when I cover how to crochet a great big hole.

lmao Yeah... nothing right about that last statement.
